Dear Friend,

Spring can be a wonderful time in Indiana with all the beautiful colors and warmer weather. However, as we have seen recently the weather this time of year can be very unpredictable and destructive. Our neighbors, just south of us in Henryville, experienced just how quickly life can change. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected.

Below are a few tips on how to best prepare for an event such as this.

What to do Now, Before a Storm
tornado - wider

The best way to protect your family against potential weather disasters and emergency situations is to be prepared.  Here's what you can do.

storm_warning sign21st - Discuss with your family:

  • Where your "safe room" is (basement or interior room)
  • Where you will meet if separated
  • Who your out of town contact is
  • Where your Disaster Supply Kit is located
  • How to operate gas and water shut-off valves

2nd - Compile a disaster supply kit:

Communication & Power:

  • Battery-operated radio
  • emergency kit samplesCell phone
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Do not include candles, which cause more fires after a disaster than anything else

Clothing and Bedding:

  • Rain gear
  • Hat and gloves
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • One complete change of clothing and footwear per person

Water - 3 gallons/person, minimum

Food - Minimum three-day supply of non-perishable food that requires no refrigeration and little or no water. Perishable items should be changed or replaced every six months.

First Aid Kit & Sanitation Supplies - Include Prescription & Non-Prescription Drugs

Pets - If you havepets don't forget to prepare for them as well. Have plenty of water, food and a leash or harness available.

3rd - Backup Important Family Documents

  • happy-familyImportant telephone numbers
  • Record of bank account numbers
  • Inventory of valuable household goods  (Pictures and/or video of your home and possessions will help greatly with any future insurance claims.)
  • Copy of will, insurance policies, contracts, deeds, stocks and bonds
  • Record of credit card account numbers and companies
  • Copy of passports, social security cards, and immunization records

I hope you'll never be in a situation that calls for this but if so, I want you and your family to be as best prepared and safe as possible.

Wishing you a happy and safe Spring,
